*the Surfside News, has been transformed to the Surfside ‘Ohana News – Promoting Inclusivity at Makaha Surfside.

The Makaha Surfside By-Laws currently state that only owners may serve on Board Appointed Committees. Due to this, the previous Newsletter Committee has been disbanded and the interested members have reformed as the Community News Collective, a private group dedicated to increasing transparency and accountability from the governing body and management agency of Makaha Surfside.

E ola ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi!

Long live the Hawaiian language!

LOKOMAIKAʻI: [loko·maikaʻi]  (lō’-kŏ-mā’i-ka’i)
pronounced loh-koh-mah-ee-kah-ee

From the words loko = character, disposition, heart, feelings inside one; and maikai`i = good. To feel and act kindly towards others, merciful, generous, gracious and humane. Lokomaika’i is a Hawai’ian word that means “to always act with generosity and kindness toward others”  It is an extension of aloha and love.
I loko o ko mākou ʻohana Surfside, makemake mākou e mālama kekahi i kekahi me ka lokomaikaʻi.  Translation: In our Surfside family, we want to treat each other with kindness.

Susan’s Social Corner

The Wai’anae Coast Aikido & Movement Center offers regular schedule of Aikido Mondays to Fridays for children, teens and adults.  Please call Xavier at (808) 202-6171 or Louise at (808) 462-1118. It is located at 84-1210 Kaulaili St. Makaha. Just go up Makaha Valley road and take the second left. You’ll then see it’s the first
address on the left. Learn self- defense, self- awareness , and much more.

Now, also at the ‘dojo’ are classes for the public on Saturday mornings at 10AM to 11AM. They are Fitness Classes for a Healthier Mind and Body. The cost is $10 per class or by donation. Come enjoy yourself.

Another opportunity at this location is on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 5:30PM to 6:30PM. It’s Sufi Dance Class! It’s led by Makaha Surfside resident Kaye. Next classes are May 4th and May 18th. Payment by donation. Enjoy upbeat music while doing free-flow and guided movements including colorful scarves.

New find: Yoga on Sundays 9AM to 10AM. Yoga with Kurt. On the beach in back of Makaha Cabanas. Pay by donation. There’s a bit of a walk from the street to the beach (on the public alleyway) hence bring a towel or lighter weight material than usual yoga mat (my recommendation) . You can reach Kurt at (209) 485-8344 with any questions but just show up, ya know. It’s worth the effort.

Yoga on Beach at Surfside in front of building A. Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30AM to 9:30AM.  By donation. Beautiful view of Lahilahi as you practice. Teacher Louise. (808) 462-1118, just show up. Bring your companion animal if you like.  Louise brings hers.

Wai’anae Public Library has an Adult Book Club monthly. This month it’s only once -on Zoom on May 24th- to read a book by Barbara Kingsolver at 6:00PM to 7:30PM instead of both Zoom and in-person as usual. Wow, there are a number of exciting events there soon. This May there’s a Corn Lei Workshop on the 3rd and a Container Gardening workshop on May 13th 10:00AM to 12:00PM.  Call the library at (808) 697-7868 for more info.

OFFICE CLOSED  MEMORIAL DAY May 26 ~ High School GRADUATION: Waianae  May 19th at sunset & Nanakuli  May 20th

Safety First – Hurricane Season

Hurricanes and power outages can be disruptive and dangerous, but there are steps you can take to prepare for them. The list of Oahu Hurricane Shelters has recently been reduced by the City & County from 121 to just 38 possible shelters.  In case you’re stuck in a storm away from home here are the local shelters closest to the Westside:

  • Makaha – Kamaile Academy PCS: 85-180 Ala Akau St
  • Nanakuli Elementary: 89-778 Haleakala Ave
  • Nanakuli High and Intermediate: 89-980 Nanakuli Ave
  • Kapolei High: 91-5007 Kapolei Pkwy
  • Waipahu High: 94-1211 Farrington Hwy

If you haven’t already done so, assemble an emergency kit. Your kit should include food, water, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, batteries, a radio, and other essential items. For more information form the State Department of Emergency Management  visit www.honolulu.gov/dem

MSS Connections

by AOAO President, Pam Briece

This has been a spring of discovery and learning to work together, as a new board, for the betterment of the association. Technology is the key word in my mind. We still continue to work out the “kinks” in the new hybrid system of Board Meetings.

  • Having the opportunity to have both
in-person and Zoom meetings has catapulted us to the 21st century. Being able to attend from anywhere modern technology can reach has allowed more owners to become more actively involved.
  • The new and improved website makes communication much easier. As we move forward I
implore you to register on the website so you can receive the newest information and news.
  • The board is also working on what it will take to update our technology in the office and security to make it safer, protected, and current.

SOS – Support Our Surfside

Aloha MSS Owners; there are many ways to get involved in your AOAO. You can attend the bi-monthly Board meetings, serve on an AOAO committee, volunteer your time to help with community projects, or contact the MSS Board with your ideas and concerns [all via our new website].

MSS Committees: Newsletter,  Community Outreach / Quorum, House  Rules/Fines, and  the Reserve Study.

We are always looking for new members with a variety of skills and interests to help us make our community a better place. Please use the website or let the office know if you’re interested in joining. www.makahasurfside.net
