Outside My Window
by Angie Fenton
Makaha Surfside is a very unique community. Some have chosen to retire here, while many are working full-time and raising families. Some reside permanently and others are seasonal. Some have come to find peace, some for a new life, while many are simply surviving, too busy to even know or care which phase of life they are in. But we are all here because we love the peace and views the ocean and beach gift to us every day. It is truly a visual and spiritual paradise.
I see it all outside my window, every day. But is it paradise when people are unkind or when gossip fills the air? When depression and anxiety is someone’s constant companion, or when addiction is awake and engaged, either within or with someone they love? Is it paradise when someone is battling pain every day, or when you don’t know when or where your next paycheck is coming from? Is it paradise to think that no one ever really sees you? I see it all outside of my window.
WE ARE MORE SIMILAR IN THE AREAS OF IMPORTANCE THAN WE ARE DIFFERENT. Because of that, we ALL have the capacity to be compassionate with each other, and to create a community in which kindness prevails. Outside all of our windows, we can create a space for tolerance and connection as we talk TO each other, rather than ABOUT each other. What if during June, we find one person a week that needs a hug, or a ride or an acknowledgement that they are not invisible.
One small simple act of kindness once a week and we begin to create bridges and connections, closing the cracks that we all fall thro ugh at times, and allowing paradise to exist even in life’s hardships all because one act and one person at a time DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I see all those possibilities outside of my window.

KING KAMEHAMEHA DAY:
King Kamehameha Day is Sunday, June 11 th , 2023 2023 Theme: E ala e nā kini o ka ʻāina! (Arise all people of the land!) On December 22, 1871, King Kamehameha V proclaimed a national holiday to honor and celebrate his grandfather, known as Kamehameha the Great, because he united the islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii during his monarchy from 1782 and 1819.
Originally, the people of Hawai‘i wanted to mark the legacy of Lot Kapūaiwa (Kamehameha V) on his birthday, December 11. Being the humble chief that he was, he opted to honor his grandfather instead and pushed the holiday as far away from his birthday as possible, hence the arbitrary date of June 11. Thus, June 11, 1872, was the very first Kamehameha Day holiday ever celebrated.
The magnificent gold statue of King Kamehameha the Great at Aliʻiolani Hale will receive its annual lei draping on Friday, June 9th, between 1:00pm-5:00pm. Each island will host its own King Kamehameha Celebration Hoʻolauleʻa. Oahu’s is at Kapiolani Park right after the floral parade which starts Saturday, June 10th at 9:00am, in front of Aliʻiolani Palace in downtown Honolulu, and ends in Waikiki at Kapiolani Park around 11:00am. Everyone is invited to participate.
Kamehameha Day is a state holiday in Hawaii and will be observed on Monday, June 12, on which state offices and some schools are closed. The Bus runs on its reduced holiday schedule. Some businesses and stores may also be closed on this day.

PLUMBING ISSUES
Protect your plumbing, maintain the flow. Remember, only toilet paper should go down below! Avoid costly repairs and clogs, by treating your AOAO plumbing with care. Let’s keep our pipes happy and free from despair. Together, we can ensure a smooth and problem-free plumbing system. Please note: not even “flushable” wipes should go through our pipes, that was the cause of the May emergency repair!
NO TILING LANAIS
As spalling work continues on the B building, the fresh clean lanais seem like a great place to tile. However, this is prohibited for a good reason. The addition of tile can cause future damage requiring repairs to be made at the owners expense! ‘A’ole Tile!
