Island Interviews

Featuring MSS Resident:
Larry M., from A Building

For those of you who may have heard of kenpo karate, you may already be familiar with the U.K.K.A., the Universal Kenpo Kung Fu Association. One of our really cool residents, Larry M., is a 9th degree black belt senior master with the organization.  He will be taking over its full administration next February, when the current grand master retires. Turning 68 on June 14th, I am impressed to find out Larry himself still competes in several international tournaments each year. After his promotion, he will focus on the logistics of masters tours and training seminars.

Larry moved to Surfside in October 2022, after celebrating his birthday just 5 months before on a vacation to Oahu! He ended his Americana country music band in Las Vegas, and immediately decided THIS is where he wanted to lay down his retirement roots and stay put. He says he feels safe here and “it’s important to have a strong sense of community, and I’ve seen that here at Surfside from the beginning”. Larry also expressed a desire to meet more neighbors at BBQs and pool parties.

What was that about that country music band?! From 2014 to 2022 Larry was in “The Morph Kings” and played in Las Vegas with John Luc Ponti, Yes, and Sublime (visit them on YouTube.com.) He said he “never really liked being on stage, but I always loved playing the music, and the catalog, it was an amazing set every time!”  He was the drummer and songwriter with the band and they wrote seven songs for the feature film “The Identical” starring Ray Liotta and Seth Green. Released in 2013, The movie is on YouTube as well!

Larry was the last born into a family of 8 children.  He talks to his son in Las Vegas every day and is proud of his success as a national food distributor, in addition to his son’s accomplishments in earning a 3rd degree black belt, carrying on the family tradition!

Interviewed By Community News Collective Member, Michelle K. Do you have an interesting life story? If you’d like to share it with your MSS community, contact us for an interview. (Full disclosure, I contacted Larry for this one, it was my idea.)

2023 is the Year of the Kahuli!

Pictured here is the native Kahuli snail. It thrives in our Wai’anae Mountain Range, but to the rest of Hawaii, it is an endangered species on the brink of extinction! Experts from the Division of Wildlife will be at the Wai’anae Public Library on Saturday, July 22, at 10:00am to tell us about the snail extinction prevention program and how these beautiful creatures effect our ecosystem. PBS has just finished a documentary filmed in Hawaii and attendees will get to preview the film before its national release. Attendance is free and there is no registration.

 SUMMER FUN in the SUN

Owners are encouraged to send comments or participate in the upcoming House Rules, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Finance Committee meetings. The Pool Rules are up for review.
Current house rules state, “only U.S. COAST GUARD approved safety devices/life jackets are permitted in the pool. All other floatation devices, toys and balls or alike are not allowed. No noodles, hardballs (such as tennis balls), footballs etc., and no kickboards.” Parents are kindly reminded to supervise young swimmers, as there have been calls to revise house rules to clearly outline parental responsibilities and solo swim age limits.
Please remember that propping open pool gates is also against house rules and a major safety concern. Please be kind and care for your fellow residents and especially the safety of our keiki.

Did you know?

Living in Hawai`i Nani, we’re no strangers to pesky critters. But fret not, as there are various natural methods to tackle these issues without pesticides. For cockroaches, fleas, bed bugs, and ants: 1) Cover all drains, 2) Use essential oils, either peppermint, cinnamon, lavender, or citrus on cotton balls or as a spray, 3) Employ food-grade Diatomaceous Earth with caution (DO NOT use in windy areas or INHALE). For mice and rats: Seal small holes with steel wool, deter them with scents like clove, eucalyptus, spearmint, citronella, cinnamon,  cassia, peppermint, and  lemon. Consider using an AC12g Ultrasonic Pest Repeller for various pests if you have extra outlets to spare.

Residents may request from the office a free peppermint oil spraying for your lanai as well as sticky pest traps when available!
